The New Halter Boy

Last summer, my good friend Carol Thibodeaux brought a little six-month old AQHA weanling out to our farm as a gift. The kids named him Humphrey. Today, I finally got a halter on him. I've been working at it for weeks. Because my time with him is limited to just a few minutes before I get ready for work, the process took a lot longer than it should have. Now that I have the halter on him I can start halter breaking him so he can be led where I need to take him, tie him when I need to, teach him to trailer load, etc. All of this will ultimately lead up to this fall, after he turns two, when he'll be taken to the trainer who will break Humphrey to ride. It's all a process that results in a greater relationship between horse and owner, enjoying many hours on the trail together.
I've been thinking about doing a message series called "Horse Sense." I think it would be fun to take the film crew out to the trainers and capture some of the process on film to illustrate my messages with. Maybe I'll even bring Humphrey out on stage for one of the services. There are so many references in scripture to horses and there's a lot to learn from the parallel between how horses are trained and how God trains us. I certainly hope I'm more easily trained than Humphrey!

  1. A series on "Horse Sense" would be pretty awesome! The teachings of Dr. Lew Sterrett at SermonontheMount.org is pretty head on with using trust and faith as a key implement to training horses. And as always Pat Parelli has great stuff on using trust and relationships to train. I own a couple of his DVD's and I can see his methods of training being used spiritually as well. Good luck with Humphrey! I have a couple of 2 year old thoroughbreds and a new 2 month old that I'm training myself!

  2. Humphrey has a great looking face. I work on a brood mare farm, taking care of the houses on the property. I've seen quite a few horses come and go, and hes a good looking one! Good luck in training him. (Prayers with you Humphrey)

  3. P. Jeff I don't know much about horses, other than they are beautiful and amazing creatrues. Since I was a little girl I have loved horses and my little girls love them also. Although none of us have a had a chance to really experience them, I know that they are truly a wonderful animal. I am sure that you would be able to use this example to teach us at the church and all those who watch the pod cast and TV show more about our relationship with the Lord and help us understand how amazing his guidance can be. I am so looking forward to your equestrian wisdom!

  5. PRETTY HORSE. MY FAVORITE. YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER, BUT PROBABLY KNOW ABOUT TRIGGER AND BUTERMILK. I LOVED ROY ROGERS AND DALE EVANS. MIKE THOUGHT HER HORSE WAS BUTTERCUP, BUT I KNEW IT WAS BUTTERMILK. HAHA LOVE OLD WESTERNS, TOO.
